The idea behind ActivistLab is a simple one. We’re an online magazine founded on the belief that the more people equipped with the skills to take action on issues that matter, the better. We want more activists out in the world taking action.
We’re also a home for people doing good who want to do good better. We want to challenge norms, explore new ideas, and openly discuss our activism-related successes as well as our failures.
Put another way, we want to open source activism.
So where’s all this coming from? A deep sense of dread, to be completely honest. There’s an overwhelming number of mind-numbing problems in the world: global warming, nuclear proliferation, massive social inequality, war, poverty, deep-rooted discrimination, and environmental devastation to name a few.
Movements exist to ‘solve’ these problems, but the challenges are immense and we’re often up against extremely well-funded opponents who fight tooth and nail for the status quo.
The good news is that, despite the odds, we’re winning. As the saying goes, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” People all over the world are rising up and demanding a better world. The bad news? That moral arc isn’t bending nearly fast enough. It’s time to learn from our mistakes, innovate, take risks, and kick things up a notch.
And this is where ActivistLab comes in. We’re here to help make it happen.
The plan is simple: dramatically increase the number of people equipped with the technical skills and knowledge necessary to solve the issues they care about. We want to redefine what it means to be an activist — anybody can be one and everybody should be one.
We want to open source activism and break our movements out of the organizational issue-based silos that divide us. It’s time to rally together, learn from one another, and win big.
The amount an individual can accomplish in our hyper-connected society is huge. And collectively? We can shake the very foundations of the world.
Where You Come In
We’re dreaming big and we need your help to make this happen. ActivistLab exists to interact with and engage the massive number of activists, organizations, and movements already working on critical issues around the world.
We aren’t here to preach from the mountaintop, our goal is to create space for the conversations already taking place — and help start new ones.
For those who are new to all this, you’re even more important. You’re the future changemakers who will challenge the ways we do things and we want to give you all the skills needed to do just that. We don’t care who you are or what you’re interested in, just that you’re ready to help make this world a better place.
Open sourcing activism won’t be quick, but we’re here to dream big, share deeply, and dare audacious things. We can’t wait to work with you all in making this happen.
